Issues and Strategies for International Development is a four-day intensive course on international strategies for the performing arts. The course is presented by the Development Platform, in collaboration with the Danish Arts Foundation, Lene Bang.org and CINARS, Montreal

The course, which is developed by CINARS will enable both early career Danish professionals the opportunities to acquire the necessary skill set to make the leap in to international touring circuits, as well as being an opportunity for more established professionals to enhance their practices in changing global arts markets.

The course will be facilitated by Arts Management Consultant and Educator Esther Charron assisted by Gilles Doré, International Development Director, CINARS.

Through funding made available from the Danish Arts Foundation there is ten available places on the course. You will be joined by the ten companies who have been selected by the Arts Foundation’s strategic programme for the promotion of Danish Performing Arts at CINARS 2020.


Target group: Up-coming Danish producers and self-producing artists with international ambitions, as well as established producers, creative producers, managers and companies.
Applicants must have some prior touring experience and a willingness to develop international touring strategies. You do not need to attend Cinars 2020 to join the course.


Learning objectives:
By the end of the course, participants will have gained skills in the following areas:

  • Segmentation of networks and touring structures;
  • Market analysis and development;
  • Assessment and use of international touring management tools;
  • Creation of custom strategies, including the design of prospecting, promotion, and sales tools;
  • Knowledge on and use of available relevant sources of information.


Date and time: 12th May to 15th May – each day from 9:00 to 17:00


Seminar Overview:

DAY 1: Understanding the nuts and bolts of the performing arts.

DAY 2: Learning to promote one’s work in a competitive environment.

DAY 3: Evaluating touring needs and value – negotiating and contracting.

DAY 4: Managing a tour.

The Issues and Strategies for Development course will provide you with practical tools and best practices to better understand the international cultural ecosystem and tackle the challenges of international development for the performing arts in various markets around the globe.

Esther Charron offers a theoretical framework on managing performing arts and fosters the development of a common vocabulary to accelerate the understanding of important concepts. Gilles Doré will add to the theoretical concept some real-life cases and experiences. Local Danish guest experts will lay out the issues to be faced by relating to their own field experience.

Every training day is divided into two main sessions to facilitate knowledge transfer and stimulate meaningful interactions among participants:

Morning: Theory and Know-How;

Afternoon: Danish Guest Speakers. (the guest speakers are yet to be announced)

CINARS has developed this course concept since 1999 in several countries including Mexico, South Korea, Finland and Norway, and the model has proven to create a dynamic context that encourages discussions among the participants, instructors, and guest experts. The course program has enabled more than 100 agents and artistic company representatives in the field of theatre, dance, music, circus, and multidisciplinary arts to organize tours across the globe for the past two decades.

 

Price: The fee to participate for four full days are only DKK 900 (lunch included).

Selection procedure

If the CINARS seminar sounds interesting and relevant to you and your practice, we kindly encourage you to apply. Applications will be submitted to a selection panel made up by the Development Platform, Lene Bang Org and the course coordinators from CINARS.

The course coordinators wish to aim for a motivated group with different experiences and perspectives. Therefor the following benchmarks’ will be taken into consideration when we assess applications:
