Theatre Seminar

Apply to part of the independent performing arts stand at The Theatre Seminar.

Are you a newbie when it comes to tour sales, and also new to The Theatre Seminar? And do you want to tour Denmark with your performance piece during the theatre season 2023/24? Then apply to take part in the project ‘Independent performing arts at The Theatre Seminar,’ where you’ll have the chance to pitch your performance at Denmark’s largest trade show for touring performing arts, The Danish Theatre Association’s Theatre Seminar.

In addition to covering the participation fee and accommodation costs, this project also involves a preparatory workshop prior to The Theatre Seminar. This year, The Theatre Seminar will be held in Esbjerg on 18th – 20th November 2022. You’ll attend a full-day workshop that will prepare you to pitch and promote your performance piece.

If you want to participate, it’s a requirement that your performance piece is approved for the Guarantee Scheme (Garantiordningen) for the theatre season 2023/24.

The application deadline was June 1. 2022

This is what you get

  • Participant fee covered + accommodation for one person from your company (approx. 5,000 DKK)
  • Full day preparatory workshop. Up to two people from your company can participate. N.B. It’s compulsory to participate. The workshop aims to prepare you as best as possible for The Theatre Seminar, and ensure you get the most out of the experience.
  • Representation at the independent performing arts stand at The Theatre Seminar
  • Pitching on the main stage

This is the second time The Development Platform is running this project to improve the visibility of independent performing artists in Denmark. The pilot project in 2021 was a great success for the independent companies who participated.

“It made such a difference to us. We managed to sell our performance to 20 different venues, all because we were at The Theatre Seminar. If we hadn’t received the financial support and been ‘whipped’ into submitting applications, practicing our pitch, etc., we just wouldn’t have been able to do it. I’m pretty sure we were only able to tour as we did because we attended The Theatre Seminar,” says Astrid Hansen Holm, director and dramaturg at Ruby Gamache.

Who can apply?

The target group for the project are performing artists and companies who have received financial support for their productions but have little or no experience in tour sales in Denmark (incl. little or no experience with trade fairs such as The Theatre Seminar). The project is designed for performing artists and companies with potential for greater distribution to venues across Denmark, but who lack the necessary knowledge and resources to realise that potential. In order to apply, it’s also a requirement that your performance piece is approved for the Guarantee Scheme (Garantiordningen) for the theatre season 2023/24.

About the project

‘Independent performing arts at The Theatre Seminar’ includes a series of initiatives prior to and during The Danish Theatre Association’s Theatre Seminar on 18th – 20th November 2022 in Esbjerg. The aim is to make it possible—through facilitation and training—for independent performing artists and companies to participate in Denmark’s largest annual trade fair for performing arts tour sales, The Theatre Seminar. In practical terms, 8 – 12 selected performing artists or companies will receive professional training prior to The Theatre Seminar, receive financial support for the participant fee and accommodation during The Theatre Seminar, and be included in The Development Platform’ stand and “intimate” stage as part of a united, profiled identity, ensuring visibility at The Theatre Seminar.
