UP is back from summer holidays with a message to the politicians

»As entrepreneurs, independent performing artists have a significant value for our society. The minister needs to know this, we in the field need to talk about it ourselves, and a future performing arts reform should take this into account«, writes Anne Dalby, head of UP, the Development Platform for Performing Arts.

Before the summer holidays, the government, with the Minister of Culture at the forefront, announced a multi-billion kroner a year initiative to strengthen innovation and independent entrepreneurship. Head of UP, Anne Dalby, argues in Kulturmonitor that politicians should initiate similar initiatives for artistic entrepreneurship in an upcoming performing arts reform.

In short, artists and producers in the so-called 'free field' can be characterised as independent entrepreneurs, and Anne points out about the independently producing performing artists that:

»They help make cities attractive places to live and they contribute to important conversations, new thinking and innovation«

With this discussion, UP also appeals for the independent field of performing artists to speak up more about their own value - not only in the ways they highlight important social issues and contribute to a rich and diverse cultural life, but also the economic and "hard" value they create in society. To raise awareness outside of performing arts circles of this part of value creation, we should articulate ourselves more as "independent performing artists".
